TL Virtual Cafe Webinar: Ditching Dewey

DitchingDeweyTL

I hope you’ll join me tomorrow night (February 2nd) at 8PM Eastern for the February TL Virtual Cafe Webinar. I’ll be discussing one of my FAVORITE topics…Ditching Dewey!

I’ll be sharing in details the steps I took throughout the entire process of genrefying our library — both fiction and nonfiction. I get questions about this regularly, so I’m really excited to share about this in the awesome TL Cafe setting!

Find more details, including the link to join the webinar, on the session page. Also visit the session page afterwards for the webinar archive.

  1. I am getting a new library, we are getting a new middle school in our district, and I am genrefying my library or at least the fiction section for now. I labeled my books last year, so as I move them I am rearranging them when I move. I plan to do my nonfiction within the next year or two. Did you mix the nonfiction and fiction within the shelves, for example put the war books next to the Historical Fiction and so on? Right now my fiction is on one section of shelves and non fiction is on the another section of shelves.

    1. Yes, that’s exactly what I did. The sports fiction and nonfiction are on the same shelf (but they are separate/not intershelved). Nonfiction supernatural and mythology are shelved near SciFi/Fantasy. History and war nonfiction are across the isle from historical fiction. This really makes sense to the students when they’re looking for books, and it’s not something you can do with nonfiction separate and organized by Dewey. Hope this helps!

      1. Thank you! That’s helps tremendously! I don’t know if I can get it done before I have to move all my books over spring break, but I will get started. I would hate to have to move them all again in the future.
